General Goals
Bring Suburbs to life
Average incomes should be able to afford average homrs
Solve the alcohol and drug dependence issue
Additional Goals
Reduce the necessity of driving to do day-to-day things
Address youth mental health and loneliness
Avoid ghetto creation
Notes
Improve affordability
People have more time and energy if they don't need to overwork themselves to afford a life
People are less stressed and happier if they feel financially secure
People are more likely to raise a family in a suburb
Create pedestrian town squares at the heart of suburbs
Purpose is to give the neighbourhood easy access to a place where they can:
Hangout with family/friends/community
Host small events like celebrations and local markets
Find convenience stores without having to drive
Launch a small business with minimal overhead
Must contain at least :
A convenience store (that sells more than snacks)
A coffee shop/tea house (ideally local)
A restaurant/pub (ideally local)
A small indoor community space/event hall
A number of small to medium store spaces
Some art/aesthetic decorations
Plenty of seating and greenery
Nice to haves:
Daycares overseen by retirees
It takes a village to raise a child after all
Cultrue oriented/entertainment focused spaces
Limit parking spots to avoid turning them into a destination for non resident
Government built/supported suburbs will follow a hub and spoke model:
The model is as follows:
The hub:
Pedestrian townsquare at the center
Surrounded by a couple low rise office and residential buildings
Residential buildings can include retirement apartments(?)
Along the spokes:
Multistory apartment townhouses
Townhouses
Single unit houses
At the end of a spoke mirror until the next hub
Goal is to have the furthest single home be at most 20-30 minutes walking distance from the closest hub
In between spokes add one of the following:
Parks, Green spaces, or outdoor sport lawns
Playgrounds for children
Big community centers similar to the currently existing ones
Indoor sports
Library
Event space
Big strip malls similar to what we have now
Preference is that they look more like Tanger than southkeys/train yards
Religious building
Medical centers/clinics
Improve road quality
Improve public transportation connectivity
Commuters will have the option to not drive to work, which reduces traffic for those who need/want to
Teens who still can't drive but are otherwise independent don't need to rely on parents driving them around
Solve drug abuse and overdosing
Safe supply saves lives but solves nothing
Pretending drug abuse is a homeless/urban/rural only problem doesn't solve anything
Alcoholism is in the same category tbh
The solutions:
Housing Affordability because if high income earners struggle to afford mortgages, low income families are shit out of luck
The safe supply policy should be part of a wider rehabilitation program that includes:
Drug rehabilitation and weaning is the priority
Likely in an AA styled format
Includes the basis of building a support network of people similar situations
People have multiple chances to go through the system
